The Year of My Body:
My 2025 Reset
By Rick Kirby, Founder of The Reset Magazine
The Beginning of My Reset
At the start of 2025, I made a decision that would change the course of my life. I was standing in front of the mirror, heavier than I’d ever been — 105 kilograms — and feeling the weight of years of bad habits. Too much eating, too much drinking, and not nearly enough movement.
I was tired, unfit, and drifting toward a version of myself I didn’t want to become. Something deep inside me whispered that it was time. I needed a reset — before my health passed the point of no return.
So I made a bold commitment: 2025 would be the year of my body.
A Marathon Mindset
To make it real, I took a leap of faith. I signed up for my first marathon.
At that point, I could barely jog 5 kilometres, but that single act — clicking “register” — gave me a purpose. It wasn’t just about running. It was about reclaiming my body, my health, and my identity.
Running quickly became a metaphor for my entire reset. Every step reminded me that change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a long, steady climb built on small, consistent choices.

One Year Alcohol-Free
The first and most important choice was to give up alcohol. What started as “just a few drinks” had quietly become a daily routine. It dulled my energy, my focus, and my motivation.
So, on January 1st, I began my year without drinking.
The early weeks were tough — social events felt strange without a glass in hand — but the benefits came quickly. My sleep improved, my mood stabilised, and the mental fog lifted. For the first time in years, I felt present in my own life.
That decision alone changed everything. It was the foundation my reset was built upon.
Learning to Move Again
Next, I needed to rebuild my strength and mobility. At first, that meant simply walking — one foot in front of the other.
Gradually, walking turned into running, and running turned into training. I started studying fitness, experimenting with different approaches, and learning what worked for my body.
Then I discovered kettlebells — and that changed everything.
The Power of the Kettlebell
There was something beautifully simple and effective about kettlebell training. One piece of equipment, endless variations, and results that go far beyond muscle strength. Kettlebells improve balance, coordination, endurance, and mobility — all essential as we age.
I became fascinated. I wanted to understand every movement, every benefit. That passion led me to qualify as a gym instructor, and soon after, I began studying to become a certified kettlebell instructor.
Today, I use kettlebells as my only form of resistance training — and I’ve never felt stronger, leaner, or more capable.
I’m currently completing my Kettlebell Instructor Certification, which will allow me to offer live online kettlebell classes to others who want to reset their own health and fitness — safely, effectively, and from the comfort of home.

Fueling the Reset
Exercise was just one part of the equation. I also had to completely rethink how I fuelled my body.
For years, I’d eaten on autopilot — quick meals, comfort food, mindless snacking. But as I began to educate myself about nutrition, I realised that food isn’t the enemy. It’s energy. It’s healing.
I learned to cook again. Simple, nourishing meals made from whole ingredients became the cornerstone of my new lifestyle. I stopped eating emotionally and started eating intentionally — to support my training, my energy, and my wellbeing.
Becoming a Holistic Wellness Coach
As my own transformation unfolded, I realised that physical change is only one part of the reset. True health comes from aligning the body, mind, and purpose.
That insight led me to qualify as a Holistic Wellness Coach, helping others create balance in every area of their lives — not just in the gym, but in their mindset, habits, and relationships with themselves.
And because I believe growth never stops, I’m now continuing my studies in the field of coaching, deepening my knowledge so I can better serve others on their own reset journeys.
The Mental Reset
Without alcohol, junk food, or distractions, something incredible happened: clarity.
For the first time in years, I could see my life with perspective. I realised how disconnected I’d been — not just from my body, but from my values and potential. The physical reset was really just a gateway to something much deeper: a mental and emotional renewal.
I began to feel grounded, confident, and in control again. I started waking up excited about the day ahead — something I hadn’t felt in a long time.
The Birth of The Reset Magazine
As my transformation became visible, people started asking questions. Friends, family, even strangers wanted to know how I’d done it — how I’d lost weight, found motivation, and changed my mindset.
That’s when I realised this wasn’t just my story — it was something bigger.
There are thousands of us over 50 who feel stuck, disconnected, or unsure where to start. We don’t need to chase youth; we need to rediscover our strength.
So I launched The Reset Magazine — a place to share stories, advice, and inspiration for people who want to take back control of their health and happiness.
It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again
If you’re reading this and you feel like you’ve drifted off track — please hear this: it’s not too late.
Your body still wants to move. It still responds to nourishment, care, and consistency. Whether your reset means giving up alcohol, walking every day, lifting a kettlebell, or simply making better choices — what matters most is that you start.
Because when you do, everything else begins to fall into place.
My journey is far from over. I haven’t yet crossed that marathon finish line — but I already feel like I’ve won. I’ve regained my health, my clarity, and my purpose.
And that, to me, is the real power of the reset.
